Benefits of Electronic Water Conditioning

If the reason you use a water softener is to prevent lime scale from forming inside your water heater, pipes, on shower heads, tile, or forming a toilet bowl ring, then an Electronic Water Conditioner is a very desirable alternative to salt based water softeners. If you want improved soap efficiency, but don't like the oily feeling of salt conditioned water, then Scalewatcher® will please you.
Big Savings in Operating Costs The operating costs of a Scalewatcher unit are much less than salt regenerated ion exchange water softeners. First of all, the installation cost of a salt type water softener for a typical home is between $1000 and $3000.  The only ongoing cost for a Scalewatcher unit is a small amount of electricity - less than $3.00 per year. The cost of operating a salt regenerated water softener is more than $100 per year for just the salt. Salt systems have electrical timers and controls that draw approximately the same amount of electricity as a Scalewatcher unit. Then there are the ongoing maintenance costs. Scalewatcher units have no moving parts and a design life of 30 years. Ask anyone who has lived with a salt type of water softener for very long, and they will usually have stories of expensive repairs or service every few years. There is a lot to go wrong with salt type water softeners. There is little to go wrong with a Scalewatcher electronic unit.
Sodium Danger Eliminated Unlike the salt-based water softeners, the Scalewatcher Electronic Water Conditioning unit does not add any chemical, including sodium, to the water. Salt presents a number of problems. Salt-based water softeners recharge by using salt to attach sodium ions to a resin bed. Water is softened by flowing it through the sodium charged resin bed where the sodium ions are exchanged for calcium and magnesium ions. This effectively removes scale producing calcium and magnesium, but replaces it with sodium. The advantage of having sodium instead of calcium or magnesium in your water is sodium does not develop hard scale in pipes or tile surfaces. The disadvantage is that excess sodium is a medical hazard for many people, particularly those on sodium restricted diets. For every calcium ion removed, two sodium ions are added to the water. The result is that in hard water areas, a glass of softened water can contain as much sodium as a slice of regular bread.

Excess salt in ones diet is only part of the problem with salt charged water softeners. There are also environmental problems. Putting salt into sewer systems is not good. In recent years a number of communities have outlawed the use of water softeners that discharge salt into the sewage system during the recharge process. This is being done to protect rivers, ground water, and other effluent discharge sites from salt pollution. Where septic systems are used, salt from water softeners can clog the pores in the drain field resulting in an early failure. Installing a new drain field is expensive and disruptive.

Scalewatcher's Electronic Water Conditioner is a great solution to the problems of salt-based water softeners. Scalewatcher uses no chemicals of any type.

Lime Scale Does Not Accumulate on Nozzles, and Inside Pipes By far the biggest benefit of using Scalewatcher is the elimination of lime scale from all the places around the house that it tends to accumulate. Encrusted shower heads that clog and spray in unwanted directions because of lime scale become a thing of the past. Unsightly scale on faucet nozzles is stopped and reversed. Pressure stopping scale that builds up inside of the pipes over a period of years is safely dissolved away in just a few months. Scalewatcher is an effective, low-cost alternative to re-piping for correcting pressure problems.

Unsightly Mildew on Shower Tiles Goes Away Black mildew grows on lime scale. Scalewatcher gets rid of the scale, and the mildew goes with it. It typically takes six weeks for accumulated scale to soften on shower tiles. A light rub with a soft brush is all it takes to get the mildew to flake away.

Energy Costs Reduced Scale build up inside of gas or oil fired water heaters saps away energy efficiency. The scale acts as an insulator between the hot combustion gases and the water. Instead of the heat going into the water, it goes up the flue pipe. Scalewatcher removes the water heater scale and improves the heating efficiency. Just an eighth inch of scale in a water heater increases the fuel required by 20 percent. In addition to the huge cost benefits, the hot water recovery time is improved in proportion to the amount of fuel saved.

With electric water heaters, the savings are achieved differently. Since there are no flue gases, heat is not lost up the flue pipe. Instead lime scale reduces the heat conduction from the electrode to the water. This results in higher core temperatures of the electrode unit. Higher electrode temperatures cause two things: shorter life, and reduced heating. Nichrome wire used for electrodes has a positive coefficient of resistivity with respect to temperature. This means when the temperature increases, so does the electrode resistance, and the current goes down. The rate of recovery is slowed. Removal and prevention of scale build up on the electrode helps keep an electric water heater performing like new.

Solar Heating Works Better

Scale in solar water heating systems can be a big energy barrier. If you have noticed over time that your solar water heater doesn't seem to work as well as it used to, scale is very likely the cause. Even if you haven't noticed a change, you will probably experience a noticeable improvement in two or three months after you install Scalewatcher. Getting more heat out of your solar unit means you spend less money on supplemental fuel.

Scalewatcher® Invention Comes at the Right Time The invention of the Scalewatcher Electronic Water Conditioner has come at the right time. With the public concern about health, resource conservation, and pollution, Scalewatcher is an alternative to traditional means of softening water that makes excellent sense. It overcomes the many problems with which people who like soft water have had to contend. Best of all, it costs much less than the old way of providing soft water.
